Colour of the Year 2027: Every Paint Pick, and How to Use Them with Wallpaper

Every autumn the paint brands take turns telling us what next year looks like. For 2027, almost all of them have landed in the same place: outdoors. Sage, celery, moss, clay pink, soft grey blue and terracotta. Colours you'd find in a garden, a hedgerow or a potting shed.

What stands out this year isn't one shade. It's that none of these picks asks you to follow a look. They read more like a backdrop for a home that feels like the people who live in it: warm, lived-in, a little collected, and made by human hands.

Below you'll find every colour of the year 2027 announced so far, what they have in common, and how to bring each one home with wallpaper. If you already know which colour family you're drawn to, skip ahead to the wallpaper section, where each colour has its own ideas and designs.

What Are the Colours of the Year for 2027?

Here's the full line-up so far, with more to follow as the last few brands announce.

Dulux: Soulful Sage

Dulux calls Soulful Sage "an ethereal, soft and silvery green", chosen around a theme it calls Live Lightly. It's a greyed, gentle sage that shifts with the light through the day, and Dulux has built three colour stories around it: Glow, Light and Lift. If you're in the UK, this is the one you'll see on the shelves.

Graham & Brown: Rose Earth

A warm, grounded pink with soft clay and muted brown undertones, inspired by the mineral pigments traditionally dug from clay deposits in Italy. It sits somewhere between dusty rose, plaster and faded terracotta, which means it behaves much more like a neutral than a pink usually does.

Sherwin-Williams: Celery

Celery (SW 6421) is a light, fresh herbal green, and HGTV Home has chosen it too. It's the brightest pick of the year, and probably the first time a paint company has named its colour after a salad vegetable and meant it as a compliment.

Behr: Grounded

Grounded (T27-01) is a mossy olive green with brown undertones. It deepens noticeably in lower light, so it feels bright and fresh by day and more enclosing in the evening. It's Behr's tenth colour of the year.

Valspar: Cottage Door

A greyed-out blue with warm undertones. Valspar pairs it with a soft apricot pink and a warm grey, which tells you everything about the mood they're after.

Glidden: Artifact

A smoky, mid-tone blue. Calm, classic and easy to live with, and very close in spirit to Cottage Door.

Dutch Boy: Deep Rooted

An earthy terracotta orange, like sun-baked pottery. The boldest of the warm picks.

Still to come: Benjamin Moore and Pantone

Benjamin Moore usually announces in mid-October, and Pantone in early December. Benjamin Moore is the one I'm personally waiting for. It's a favourite of mine, and its new colours tend to find their way into my designs soon after they're released. I'll add both here once they're out.

What Do the 2027 Colours of the Year Have in Common?

Put them side by side and a pattern appears quickly. Three of the seven are named after the ground itself: Grounded, Deep Rooted and Rose Earth. Three are greens. Every one of them is softened, muddied or warmed in some way. There isn't a clean, bright primary among them.

The brands' own explanations tell the same story. Dulux talks about homes that offer "a sense of calm, warmth and joy amid increasingly busy and information-filled lives." Graham & Brown describe a growing appetite for colours that bring "comfort, authenticity and a sense of connection to the home." Behr's head of colour put it neatly: calm used to mean beige, white and grey, and now it means something with more depth.

In other words, home is being treated as a place to recover. These are colours for a room you'd actually want to sit in at the end of a long day.

Why Are Earthy, Handmade Homes Coming Back?

This has happened before.

In the second half of the 1800s, factories could suddenly print wallpaper by the mile, and homes filled up with it. William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement answered with hand-drawn patterns taken straight from English gardens and hedgerows: willow, honeysuckle, strawberry thieves. It was a quiet case for things made slowly, by a person, with nature as the reference. The V&A has a lovely introduction to Morris if you'd like the full story.

The trigger is different now, but the feeling is familiar. After years of screens, social media and endless scrolling, and now a flood of AI-generated images that all start to look the same, people want things they can touch. Vinyl records, film cameras, sourdough, allotments. Homes are following, and so are the colour forecasters. Sherwin-Williams' 2027 forecast talks about nostalgia and careful craftsmanship "restoring depth and human imprint to the spaces we inhabit."

That also explains why 2027 has no single look. Rather than everyone going Art Deco or everyone going Scandi, the interest is in rooms that feel personal: a vintage chair, a family print, a pattern you fell for. The 2027 colours are there to hold all of it together.

How to Use the 2027 Colours of the Year with Wallpaper

Paint gives you the colour. Wallpaper gives you colour and pattern together, and pattern is where the personality comes in. Here's how I'd bring each colour family into a room.

Sage and Celery Green Wallpaper

Soulful Sage, Celery and Grounded between them cover almost every green you could want, from pale and silvery to deep moss. Sage is a gentle choice for bedrooms and bathrooms. It's restful without going cold, and it sits happily with natural wood, linen and cane. Celery is brighter and more awake, lovely in a kitchen or a north-facing room that needs lifting. Moss and olive work in a living room or a snug where you want the walls to wrap around you a little.

Rose Earth and Dusty Pink Wallpaper

Rose Earth is a pink that behaves like a neutral. It warms up a room without making a statement, and it's flattering in almost any light. Dusty pink wallpaper does the same job with a little more going on: a floral, a stripe or a small repeat that gives the eye somewhere to rest. It sits comfortably in a bedroom, a hallway, a nursery or a dining room, and pairs well with cream, dark wood, olive and muted greens.

Terracotta and Clay Red Wallpaper

Deep Rooted and the clay notes in Rose Earth both point towards terracotta. A warm terracotta reads more earthy than orange in most lighting, and it brings real warmth to a dining room, kitchen or bathroom. Pair it with off-white, olive green and natural linen. For something richer, burgundy and deep clay reds give the same warmth at a lower, cosier volume.

Mossy and Chocolate Brown Wallpaper

Brown is having a quiet revival. Chocolate, walnut and deep-stained woods are moving from accent to the main event in a room, and Grounded's brown undertones sit right in that family. Brown wallpaper makes a room feel settled and warm, particularly in a study, a snug or a bedroom. It's also a brilliant partner for the greens above.

Soft Grey Blue Wallpaper

Cottage Door and Artifact are mid-tone blues with the edges softened. They're calm, easy to live with and very forgiving, which makes them good for bedrooms, bathrooms and anywhere you want to feel cool without feeling chilly. A soft blue with a warm white and a touch of apricot or blush, as Valspar suggests, is a lovely, gentle combination.

Dusty Pink and Green: The Cottage Pairing

If you only take one idea from the 2027 colours, make it this one. Rose Earth with Celery or Soulful Sage is the cottage garden in colour form: roses against leaves. It's the palette behind the cottage, farmhouse and grandmillennial looks that have been growing for a few years now, and it works just as well in a city flat as in a thatched cottage. It's worth ordering a sample either way. Paint charts and screens both lie a little, and a colour that looks sage online can come out mint in a south-facing room.

Pattern Ideas for a 2027 Colour Scheme

The colours are soft and earthy, so the patterns that suit them tend to be the ones with a sense of history: florals, botanicals, small heritage repeats, hand-drawn stripes and scrolling foliage. The idea is to reinterpret the past rather than recreate it, so these patterns feel fresh, with a looser, lighter hand.

The other thing to let go of is matching. A room that feels collected, with a floral paper, a striped cushion and an old rug that doesn't quite go, has more personality than one bought all at once. The 2027 colours are forgiving enough to hold that together.

Colour of the Year FAQs

Who chooses the colour of the year?

Each brand chooses its own. Most have an in-house colour and trend team that spends the year researching interiors, fashion, travel and wider culture before settling on a shade. Dulux's comes from AkzoNobel's global research team, and Sherwin-Williams' from its Trendsight team. Pantone's comes from the Pantone Color Institute.

When is the colour of the year announced?

It runs from roughly August to December. The earliest paint brands announce in late summer, Benjamin Moore usually follows in October, and Pantone traditionally finishes the season in early December.

Has Pantone announced its colour of the year for 2027?

Not yet. Pantone usually reveals its pick in early December, and I'll update this post when it does.

Do I have to use the colour of the year to have an up-to-date home?

Not at all. Think of these colours as a starting point rather than a rule. If a colour on this list makes you feel at home, it's a good choice. If none of them does, that's a good choice too.
